Friday is a short day, so we donβt have as many bills to focus on as usual. But, wow, the ones we do have are mind-bending. Grab a cup of coffee, kick your feet up and testify ON ALL OF THEM! But first, the worst bill by farβ¦

SB 5174 - Concerning wood burning devices. - Testify CON
There really is nothing like a wood burning stove. Itβs far better than any other type of heating, much warmer, much more penetrating, and of course, itβs visually pleasing. Modern wood burning stoves are amazing machines that put out an enormous amount of heat.
Now the Department of Ecology wants to take control of this heat source. Our friends from the Skagit team give us this description:
βSB 5174: This bill states No βwood burning deviceβ shall be offered for sale in this state that does not meet the statewide emission performance standards adopted by the Department of Ecology, using an applicable test methodology adopted by the United States environmental protection agency. βWood burning device" means a woodstove, fireplace, masonry heater, residential forced-air furnace, and/or residential hydronic heater.
The bill also gives Dept. of Ecology the choice to adopt emission standards for stoves that burn coal or other solid fuels. Stoves that meet new emission standards are likely to be inefficient at heating homes [personal experience].
It will be illegal for a homeowner to sell a house with a βwood burning deviceβ that does not meet the emission performance standardsβ¦ The fiscal note shows the operating expenditures for this bill through 2029-2031 will be $1.37 million.β
Just when you thought Olympia couldnβt get any worse, they say βhold my beer.β
Time to testify CON on this one, and pass the word to all your wood burning friends!

A weekly opinion article on Washington State Politics! Please check it out!
The State (Ecology) actually has annual wood stove buy back events, paying folks $300 for any operative wood burning stove; limit 2 per household. Paid for with our tax dollars! So this Bill should not be surprising. This lunacy needs to stop, not become law.
